All these new cameras are coming out. Don’t get me wrong. Having all the professional features especially audio and hooking up additional monitors is great. Being able to use the lenses we’ve invested a lot of money into is even better. But saying it is a DSLR killer is… (take a deep breath) wrong. If you think DSLRs are stupid there’s no need to read on.
When all these camera’s came out and claimed to be a DSLR killer it really struck a nerve. If you shoot with a DSLR then you understand it is more than just the image quality. It is the ability to make it into whatever you want. It is the way I can decide how to shoot with it the way I see fit. Color profiles, white balance, shutter, apeture, ISO. I can control all of those and I don’t have someone breathing down my neck telling me HOW to shoot. If I had to sum it up in one word I would say ‘freedom.’
I am creative and enjoy being artistic. This camera doesn’t limit that vision as a cinematographer. If I want a huge shoulder rig with every accessory, I can do that. If I want to go James Bond mode and shoot where I am not supposed to, I can. Obviously there are limitations. No way am I saying this is the best camera. But the DSLR and DSLR community stand for more than just an image.
There is a very tight nit DSLR community. Both on Twitter and in the real world. Egos are everywhere but seem to be a lot less in this community. I only connect with those that are like minded and I have met a lot of great people. I continue to work with them, share ideas and talk about anything. There is a lot of learning to do to shoot great video with these cameras and it takes a community to help everyone out.
Those who feel they are ‘too good’ for everyone aren’t going anywhere. I don’t see them lasting long in this field either. A lot of arguing goes down about stupid things such as gear vs content, the best lens, the best rig, the best editing system and whatever else you can think of. I posted a tweet a that read as follows: “Dear DSLR peeps that argue about everything; You are ruining it. This is supposed to be fun. Stop taking yourself so seriously. Love, Rob”. I got mostly agreed feedback but some didn’t take it too well. If you think that post was about you, it probably was.
So the point of this post? Mostly to vent. Share my opinions on all this talk and what I feel when it comes to ‘DSLR killers.’ I am hoping companies see this and change what they say about their new cameras. Saying you are going to kill DSLRs is bold. You have to do more than kill a camera, you have to kill a community.
